Fear of School

18.11.2020

It's Monday morning, and just the ringing of the alarm clock triggers panic in you. You get a headache, feel nauseous, and feel completely helpless? This phenomenon is by no means new. However, there's now a word for it: it's called "school anxiety."

Once often dismissed as pretending, today up to a million students in Germany struggle with this. But why does it happen? Hans-Jürgen Tölle, head of the school psychological service in Munich, works daily with students and sees "pressure to perform and fear of teachers, classmates, or failure" as the cause.

Are you struggling with the material?

Get tutoring. Ask your friends to help or request tutoring sessions from your parents. Every small success boosts your self-confidence. Even through apps and YouTube videos, you can achieve a lot. If you’re struggling with math or physics, for example, https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/lehrerschmidt can help.

Are you having problems with a classmate or teacher?

Talk openly with your parents about it. They can encourage and support you. Trusted teachers can also be good contacts. The only real solution to bullying is talking and taking action together. You don't have to go through this alone.

The most important thing:

Talk to someone about it. It's completely okay to sometimes feel panic. Allow your fear and face it openly. You'll see that it doesn't have as much power over you as you think.

The no-go: Skipping school

There are reasons to want to skip school for every student. But if you just stay at home or prefer to go shopping, be prepared for problems. How severe the consequences of skipping school are depends on how often you skip and in which federal state you're not attending school.
