Scoolio Meets DKMS

08.06.2023

Every 12 minutes, a patient in Germany is diagnosed with leukemia. Among the affected are many children and teenagers. Many need a stem cell donation to survive, but cannot find a matching donor.

That’s why Scoolio has partnered with DKMS: We want to help in the search for the right donor!

DKMS (German Bone Marrow Donor Database) is a non-profit organization dedicated to giving leukemia patients a chance at recovery.

Leukemia is a severe disease that weakens the immune system. When traditional treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation therapy are no longer sufficient, a stem cell donation is often the only way to save a life.

But how can you become a donor?

The first step to becoming a potential donor is typing, using a simple saliva sample. After successful registration, DKMS will send you a test kit, which contains instructions and all the materials needed to collect the sample at home. The sample is then sent to the DKMS laboratory.

The laboratory analyzes your sample to determine your genetic traits. These traits are then stored in a database and can be compared with the traits of leukemia patients. If your traits match those of a patient, DKMS will contact you, and you can decide whether you are willing to donate.

It’s important to note that a bone marrow or stem cell donation is a simple and safe process today. There are two types of donations: One is the collection of bone marrow from the pelvic bone under general anesthesia, and the other is a stem cell donation from the bloodstream. The decision on which type of donation is needed depends on the individual case.

You should also know that the chances of being selected as a donor are very small. Less than 1% of all registered helpers in the DKMS database are ever asked to donate. That’s why every registration really matters!

How can you help? It’s simple!

  1. Register at this link
  2. Order your free registration kit to your home
  3. Follow the instructions to collect your saliva sample
  4. Send the kit back to DKMS
  5. If you are a potential donor, DKMS will contact you.

We appeal to you, dear potential heroes, to register as a donor. With just a little effort, you can help save someone’s life. Are you in?
