02.10.2020

Sweaty hands, a pounding heart, and shaking knees. You’ve probably experienced one of these things when standing nervously in front of the class. This fear is natural, but it’s really annoying. We have tips on how to stay cool in such situations.

Accept Your Excitement

Stage fright is completely normal. Don’t let it stress you out! Thoughts like “I won’t make it” or “Great, I’ll embarrass myself again” only make it worse. Your excitement shows that you care about what you’re doing, and that’s a good thing!

Overcome Your Fear of Public Speaking

Speaking from your seat isn’t a problem, but when standing in front of the board, you can’t get a word out?
Practice your sentences out loud in front of the mirror or with a friend. Get used to hearing and seeing yourself speak. You’ll need some courage for this, and it may feel awkward at first, but it’s worth it. Soon, you’ll have enough experience and routine to present your speech easily.

Secure Start

For presentations, it’s helpful to memorize the first few sentences and practice them aloud beforehand. This will create a smooth flow from the start. With a good beginning, your classmates will immediately be hanging on your words and listening intently. This could be a question to your audience or something humorous to start with.

Friendly Faces

Look at the classmates who give you a sense of security! A friend will smile encouragingly during your presentation. It will feel almost like you’re chatting alone together.

Imagine What Could Go Wrong

Visualize what could go wrong, and you’ll see: the worst-case scenario won’t happen. You can prepare for any uncomfortable situation. Think about how you’d continue after a failure. If you experience a blackout, just say, “I’m so embarrassed. But I’ve forgotten. Blackout!” or “Can you help me/give me a tip?” or “Can I try this again later or tomorrow? I can’t seem to do it right now.”

That way, the pressure is off, and your teacher can help you get back on track. This can happen to anyone. It’s totally fine to ask for help.

So, no panic!
