The Gap Between Young Generations and Companies

Generation Z and the emerging Generation Alpha are shaped by modern technology and globalization. They bring new values and expectations regarding education and careers, which businesses must adapt to in order to attract and retain qualified professionals in the long term. The mismatch in areas such as workplace culture, work-life balance, and digital transformation has resulted in many unfilled apprenticeships, high dropout rates, and dissatisfaction on both sides for years.

To address these challenges, we support companies across Germany through the scoolio app and the FuturePlan student planner, helping them reach and understand the younger target audience. At the end of 2023, we conducted a survey of over 500 young people to identify key issues and challenges that businesses should consider in the application and training process.

Challenges in the Apprenticeship Market 2024

Today’s youth are growing up amid political and social turmoil. Events such as the COVID-19 pandemic, the war in Ukraine, and global environmental issues shape their attitudes and perspectives. This generation places high value on education and career development, which presents new challenges for the apprenticeship system. Despite the proven dual education system, the number of unfilled apprenticeships remains high. From October 2022 to July 2023, 392,000 young people applied for apprenticeships through employment agencies and job centers. However, by July, 117,000 of them had neither secured a position nor found an alternative. Additionally, a growing preference for higher education and high dropout rates in certain industries, particularly in rural areas, pose additional challenges.

Reasons Behind the Imbalance

The preference for higher education as a seemingly safer career path, the desire for personal fulfillment and flexibility, and technological advancements are driving more young people toward academic careers. In our survey, only 30.9% of respondents indicated an interest in vocational training. This is particularly noticeable in trades and retail. The number of potential apprentices is shrinking. Furthermore, the high dropout rates in industries such as cosmetics, retail, food service, building maintenance, and system catering, along with industry- and region-specific difficulties, further burden the apprenticeship market. Companies in rural areas often struggle to attract applicants, as many young people prefer urban lifestyles.
